A mechanistic assessment of urban heat island intensities and drivers across climates

چکیده
The urban heat island effect (UHI) has been widely observed globally, causing climate, health, and energy impacts in cities. UHI intensities have found to largely depend on background climate the properties of fabric. Yet, a complete mechanistic understanding how UHIs develop at global scale is still missing. Using an ecohydrological land-surface model (urban Tethys-Chloris) combination with multi-source remote sensing data, we performed simulations for 49 large clusters across Northern Hemisphere 2009–2019 analysed surface canopy air (SUHI CUHI, respectively) during day night. Biophysical drivers triggering development SUHIs CUHIs similar dependencies but different magnitudes. In humid regions daytime can be explained by urban-rural difference evapotranspiration, whereas convection conduction are important arid areas. Plant irrigation promote evapotranspiration only semi-arid climates. During night, from fabric environment creates mostly warm regions. Overall, this study presents quantification worldwide proposes viable solutions sustainable climate-sensitive mitigation strategies.

Surface urban heat island across 419 global big cities.
Urban heat island is among the most evident aspects of human impacts on the earth system. Here we assess the diurnal and seasonal variation of surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) defined as the surface temperature difference between urban area and suburban area measured from the MODIS. Differences in SUHII are analyzed across 419 global big cities, and we assess several potential biophy...
متن کاملUrban climates and heat islands: albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heat
As an introduction to this special issue on urban heat islands and cool communities, this paper reviews some of the characteristics of urban climates and the causes and effects of urban heat islands. In particular, the impacts of surface albedo, evapotranspiration, and anthropogenic heating on the near-surface climate are discussed. Numerical simulations and field measurements indicate that inc...

We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports. It is especially significant on nights with clear skies and light winds which favor radiational cooling. This is most significant in the rural areas but in the city, the excess heat absorbed during the day and the local he...
